What Materials did Painters use to make their art during the American Revolution?
Usually, artists use a variety of materials to create and make their artwork. It's not much of an exception for artists during the American Revolution, although the only kind of art they created were mostly portraits commissioned by wealthy families and paintings depicting war. The oldest-known paintings discovered dated back to about 650 AD. Painters during the Revolution usually used a variety of basic materials to make art, but these are a few of the main materials they used to create their artwork:
Oil Paints (and also Charcoal)
Oil paint was usually a paste made with ground pigment and linseed oil, and it's a chief tool for artists. Oil paints had almost no texture. Traditional oil painting techniques involved the artist sketching the subject on canvas, using charcoal and/or thinned paints. An artist might use several types of paint and oils, depending on different circumstances or what type of painting they wanted to make.
Long-Handled Brushes
Long-handled brushes are mostly useful for preventing oil paints from spreading apart too easily. It can also hold plenty of paint and good for applying thick layers of paint to a painting. Long-handled brushes usually produce straight and long brush strokes.
Canvas
A canvas is a very useful and efficient tool for artists. It's usually a piece of fabric, where a painting is executed. The canvas acts as a support for the painting. At times, the painting can be stretched over the canvas and/ or wooden frame and stapled over it to create a better support.
